Ugly Corvette's? Post your pics!!!

Vettes in the '70s remember cars similar to many shown.
Sorry, this one wasn't the basis of the 1963 - 67 Corvettes. The Stingray racer was.
However, after it was retired from racing and was being used to design the Sting Ray, Bill Mitchell
missed driving it and had the Shark built. Later it was called the Mako Shark. The Shark was
actually built AFTER the '63 was in initial design.

This was a rear-engine prototype designed in 1965 and built in 1966 that preceded the
Astro II XP-880. It ran a 327 behind a modified Pontiac Tempest transaxle. It had
great handling in many situations, with its F/R 30/70 weight distribution, however,
in rapid lane changes, like you see a lot of on today's urban highways, it became very
unstable and crashed. So that design was shelved. It was at Bloomington around
1980 and was featured on the cover of Vette Vues about the same time. The last I knew,
it was owned by someone around Fort Pierce, FL.

The Astro II XP-880 above is similar but you will notice it is longer between the doors
and the rear wheels, because it is a mid engine design. While a great car, it had some
flaws that prevented production. So the mid engine hunt continued with the 1970 XP-882 below:

In the early to mid '70s, there were several custom car builders who were playing with this
basic idea below, making small Lincoln Mark IVs (? - not sure of the number) and similar designs.
I believe that there were some of these actually built in limited production runs by aftermarket
car companies.
The Mako Shark II that ran didn't have the sidepipes.
You will also notice the Mark IV 396 on the hood bulge.
