I plan on cleaning the outside of my alternator this weekend. Any tricks to making it look like new?
Avoid using any harsh chemicals like oven cleaner. It will turn the aluminum dark. Just use the parts store degreaser and a soft brush. Then rinse. After rinsing, let it dry real well before using. If real dirty, you can wash twice.
IWhen it comes as clean as you want, you can apply some high temp clear coat to keep it bright. Just a light coat.
I usually buy a rebuild kit, front & rear bearings and set of brushes, then field strip the alternator and sandblast the two halves. Add a little clear-coat and bake at 200 degrees for 30 minutes or so. Reassemble and viola you have a new alternator that looks terrific and will last another 70 thousand miles...
Many of the vendors carry rebuild kits and if not, most good auto parts stores carry the pieces and they're not very expensive. Add the hi po (over sized) pulley and it will look even better. All for about the cost of a rebuilt alternator.
