Default where to idle?

i have a question regarding where to adjust the idle on my car. i have the original sticker near the brake resevoir saying that when my car is in park or neutral, it should idle around 1500, and when in gear it should be like 650 or 700, i forget off hand.
that sounds a bit high to me...

The idle was set high on the 76 for emissions purposes. By all means bring it down if you like. I run 750 rpm curb idle. Sounds much better and is easier on the clutch.

i have my idle and fast idle(when choke is closed the rpm increases) set at 850.....i went into emissions and it failed due to hydrocarbons too high(unburned fuel) i raised idle to 1100 went thru again 5minnutes from the 1st failure and passed w/1/2 the hydrocarbons as the 1st time,,,,just remember to raise it when going thru emissions and take her back down once passed,,,or file for a exempt letter like i finally did!!

i don't have to worry about emission according to florida law. first thing, my car is a 77 - it's 29 years old. second, i removed the flowmaster 40s and installed sidepipes, so i have no cats anyways.
it just sounds a lot nicer when it's not idling quite as high, but there is a quicker response when it's adjusted higher (especially when your cam is made for 2200-5500 rpms)
