I'm going to build a stand to fire & break in my new engine before I install it. Tranny will be rebuilt at the same time. Would it be worthwhile to build the stand long enough to hold the tranny also? I'm contemplating doing the TH400 myself & thought this might be a good way to test it also, before the install.
I built my engine test stand out of two by fours and drywall screws. Only cost a few bucks to build. Worked so well, i didn;t have the heart ot throw it out afterwards as I originally intended. I just put a garden hose in the t-stat housing and some fuel line from a gas can to the fuel pump. i also used a toggle switch for the starter, the rest was just jumper cables hjooked to a battery. I also attached some glass packs to the headers so that I waould still have my hearing after breaking in the cam. I wouldn't bother with the trans, I don't think you could test it without some kind of load.
I want the engine broke in before installation so that I can finalize the install. I don't want to build on exhaust system & then switch to the coated headers later. It's much easier to look for oil leaks & such with the access that a stand provides. Besides, I can still drive my Vette while tinkering with the engine.
