Default Calling all super sleuths!!!

I have this idea that it would be really interesting to try to find out how many of the original 6700 or so 1982 Collector Editions are still alive. Its probably not possible to trace the ones that have gone overseas but I guess that number is in the tens , if that many. I have contacted my local state BMV to see if they will release a list of 1982 Corvette Vin numbers registered in the state (I am not interested in owners names and adresses so privacy shouldn't be an issue) I can then work out which of these are collectors editions from the VIN No (the 6th digit is a 0) So far no response from the BMV (surprise surprise!!!)
So I was wondering if any of you guys out there would know where I get my hands on this info.
The perfect result would be a list of all of the registered 1982 corvettes by state (the holy grail!!) thats it , no more detail requred , from this I can pull out the CE's and get a total number per state and so a total registered in the USA.
Doesn't the Police have access to a database of all the cars registered on the roads? (any freindly police officer members?) What about car insurance companies , do they have access to a database.
Anyone with any ideas would be much appreciated
Thanks

You'd be surprised about th numbers overseas, I'd say there are at least 10 in the Netherlands alone, most likely a lot more

I agree, Marck, I bet I saw/knew-of 10 '82 CE's in Pennsylvania alone while I lived there:
many of those floating around (for a 25 year-old car )

I knew that there were a few in the netherlands and had planned on researching that further but I still think that the majority by far must still be in the states (most of them in Pensylvania it seems!!;there will be one in the UK in a couple of years when I take mine home!)which is why we thought that the US was the place to start - in any event any numbers that I can put together will be more than we currently have , the only true record we have is on the 82CE registry site which only had 148 registered members and a good proportion of those members have never posted to the forum and so it is questionable if they still have their vettes.
I am not sure if getting this info is going to be possible , it just seems to me that the information must be out there so there must be some way to get my hands on it. And it would be really cool to get an idea as to how rare (or not) these cars are.

I can't seem to find my "Corvette Black Book" following my recent move, but I recall that almost 25% of 1982's production run (something-like 6700 of almost 25,000 total? ) were Collector Editions, so it'd 'make-sense' that 1-in-4 '82s left are CEs:
throw-in the fact that Chevrolet annointed them 'collectors' as they rolled out of the factory, and some owners put 'em away for safe-keeping, increasing the odds of their survival.

Just my thoughts.....

Isn't there an 82 CE Registry? That might be a good place to start.

There are 5979 82 CEs left. If you ask me how I received that info I would have to have you eliminated.

There is an 82 CE registry , it is from here that the question arose - I just thought I would put the question out there to a bigger audience to see if anyone knew of an organisation with access to a current registered vehicle database.

Me too - so thats 6757 - I knew this thread would pay off!!

Had a call from a guy from Indiana BMV , he is going to email me a list of VIN no's for all of the 82 vettes registered in Indiana - he said each state holds its own record and so I will have to contact each BMV individually How stupid is that!! Anyway , not that huge of a task , especially if I can get a couple of others at the registry to get involved and share the load

Still can't believe that there is not a central database where all of the vehicle info is pooled - doesn't make any sense to me

I'm sure there is a national database, but it's probably run by people who aren't as friendly and helpful as the people at state DMVs.
