Default Slightly higher hood recommendations??

Starting to look around at repair pieces for the 72 (that hit the tree). Its a stock 350. The original hood is fine, and I'll reuse it at first. But, in the event that I MAY want to mildy modify the carb/intake setup for a bit more ooomph, It was suggested to me that I purchase an additional/different hood (BB) for more clearance, and paint them both when I repaint the car (use the higher one, keep the orig for resale?). Aftermarket hoods are affordable, and orig ones hit ebay/forum occasionally....so I'm looking and asking you guys for what to look for. I definitley dont want anything radical, prefer a stock Corvette hood look(LT1, L88 ??) but I am unfamiliar with required clearances for "typical" carb mods.

Hope this isnt too confusing a question!

Thanks!!!

I have an L-88 hood. With a small block, I run an Edelbrock Performer RPM and a 1 inch carb spacer and still easily fit under the hood with the stock drop base air cleaner. I don't think this setup would even come close to clearing a big block/LT-1 hood. I love the looks of the big block/LT-1 hood, but you'll get more clearance with the L-88 unit.

BTW - I did the same thing you are thinking of, I gave the painter my stock small block hood to paint with the car just in case I ever sell it to some guy who has to have a stock Vette.

Real power & torque improvements can be made with a head & cam swap, with an aftermarket fuel delivery to compliment that change....I don't think you'll make noticeable gains by swapping the carb/intake, as opposed to rejetting or tuning your Q-Jet.....search for Lars threads on the Q-jet....

There's been a lot of discussion over the years about the Edelbrock Air Gap & RPM Air Gap intakes (high rise dual plane intakes--you won't need a single plane e.g. Victor or Torquer) and how to overcome the clearance issues with stock and LT1/BB hoods, namely using drop base air cleaners and shorter 1" & 2" air filters...search for threads on these intakes....

The L88 hood is tall enough for almost anything, dual carb, tri carb & fuel injection setups, centrifugal superchargers, etc.....but remember that you'll lose a lot of visibility to the front of the car.....still cool though....

I recently installed an LT1/BB hood, and just looking at it, I would say I've only gained a 1/2" above the air cleaner??????....possibly enough for a Barry Grant tri carb setup on the SB, but not enough to give me free reign on intake choices for the BB....

Hope this helps

Makoshark -- I am in the process of doing the same thing AC mentioned about the L88 hood. Car is getting painted I am itching to get more umph out of my ZZ4. Stock hood will be stored w/orig motor and tranny.

Cam, AFR Heads, Air Gap manifold, spacer and Demon carb on the drawing board....

Standup, Thanks! Yea I realize the real power comes thru head/cam improvements, but heads and cams dont pose hood clearance problems, like carbs, intakes, air cleaners...I like the L88 looks also, and sounds like that gives the best as far as clearance.

Thanks again!
