Default Outer door seals

The outer window seals/gaskets between glass and door - lots of questions:

1) How do I get them off without destroying them ?
2) Can these be removed without destroying them ?
3) I found replacements for $20 (Ecklers has them on sale) - worth the money or junk ?
4) Can I replace the rubber only and keep the original trim (appears to be stainless)
5) Are aftermarket gaskets stainless or chrome ?
6) Should I just leave them where they are and tape them when I paint the doors ?

I bought some ... still not installed in rebuilt door.

1) glass must be loosened and adjusted inward to allow removal.
2) yes - removable if the screws come out OK (mine did).
Use a GOOD #2 philips ... screws appear to be buried into the fuzzy rubber.
I recall three screws, but check AIM/manual to confirm.
3) got mine at Corvette Central ... I opted for the most expensive "correct" ones $73/pr: http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050G
4) You have to retain the separate stainless trim ... comes off with seal
5) Mine were stainless ... exact repro of the original. Note there is only one small stainless bead that is part of the seal (pics in link above)
6) I left mine off for now ... for this very reason. Plan to paint before install.

The seal pops out. The seal itself is wedged in a metal strip and there's another metal strip between it and the door tiself, the strip with the felt seal has "buttons" that snap in the metal of the door. Just carefully pry it inwards towards the glass (between the 2 metal strips) and it'll pop loose. There's a screw at the end. The othr metal strip just has holes where the buttons fall through and its clamped between the door and the metal piece of that felt strip.

No need to loosen the glass, just roll the window down.

You can see the "buttons" in this pic

They snap into holes in the metal upper part of the door,
