OK, still waiting to hear the final word on the 74 I am looking at, but have a question.
The car has 37,000 miles on it and I am 99% sure this to be true. A visual under the hood and under the car pretty much confirms this. The neighbor sold it to the current owner and gave me a verbal history on the car. How do you document the miles as true? I believe the current title shows the mileage at purchase 4 years ago being 35,000.
It's very hard to do and is of little value, except in rare instances IMO.
You could ask for all documentation on the car. If the owner had the oil changed at a commercial garage for 30 years, and had retained all the safety/emissions inspections receipts etc., you might be able to get a better handle on the actual mileage since all these documents usually contain a notation of the mileage. However, there is no proof that the speedometer cable was just disconnected for all this time, or that someone just didn't install a new speedometer (or rollback the old one) when the interior and engine compartment were redone...
My car looked like it was just driven out of the showroom even though it had 115,000 miles on it in 1974. The speedometer read 15,000 mi.

Unless you've owned the car it's entire life, you can't document the mileage and be completely sure of it. Too many variables involved. You say the car looks like it has 37K on it and it had 35K on it two years ago. That sounds like pretty good authentication to me.
Thanks guys. I was asking more for my own records how this would be done. I just would hate to buy the car and a few years down the road find there is something I should have done or tried to get from the current owner, that would aid in not leaving money on the table should I sell the car.
