Wow... Finally made it back to the Forum. I have been away for some time now defending my country against terrorism. Unfortunately, during my abscense my 75 Roadster has been plagued by a large amount of surface mold in the interior. The car has been sitting covered in the garage for nearly 2 yrs. Any ideas on how I should deal with this problem would be appreciated. Can I just clean it up with some type of household cleaner? I have heard that mold can become a health issue.
Mix Water And Baking soda, take your seats out if you can, rub the water and baking soda on the mold try not to breath and then just sweep real good should be goodto go.Welcome home.
Glad to see you made it back and thanks for your service!
I think you should be ok using something with a little bleach in it to kill the mold. You may want to try it in a inconspicuous area first. After cleaning use an aerosol disinfectant and keep the interior dry. If you leave for an extended time again, bring the car to me and I will keep it ventilated for you. Mold can't grow at 80-90 mph.
A tip, for the next time your Vette has to sit for long periods of time. Get a cloth laundry bag of sorts, anything that's a loose material that breaths, and fill it with dry white rice. Maybe make two small bags instead of one big one.
Then, when you cover and store the car, put one in the front and one in the back. The rice will absorb latent humidity, keeping the inside of the car dry. Make sure the windows are up and the car is sealed.
If it's for a few years, have a friend or a loved one replace the rice bags after a year or so.
I agree with the above technique for cleaning. Elbow grease goes a LONG way.
I don't know how this would work on a car, but I put crumpled up newspaper in the freezer and refrigerator of our motorhome to keep the mold from growing when not in use.
Thanks for all the great recommendations. It's great to have such wonderful and knowledgable Vette pals. I never would have imagined using rice. I will sure use it the next time I have to deploy.
Cleaning it off is straight-forward.
The smell is what will be tough to get rid of.
I used :
Lysol
Charcoal
Febreeze
Dryer sheets
more Lysol
Gel air freshener
MORE Lysol
Eventually the smell was lessened, but none of that stuff took it away totally.

Didn't using Lysol make the smell WORSE? I HATE the smell of Lysol.
... Gotta get the Country Breeze scent.
Thing with Lysol is that the Alkyl compound (don't breathe it directly)
will also kill the mold/mildew/bacteria that create the smell.
I think it was far too deep for the spray-on to reach ... need to soak in Lysol.
my vette sat in a damp garage for 20 some years. the interior was supposed to be black, but instead it was whiteish grey.
if i remember correctly, i used that orange 409 and let it soak for abit. after that i went over it a couple more times and really scrubbed with with paper towel.
after that i went over it with armor all. stuff is black as black and it SHINES.
