Default New Tires...What should I buy?

I am going to replace the tires on my 78. After 15 years the TA's have done their job. I like the look of the TA's and will probally go back with the same tire.
My question is what is the difference in the look of the 60 vs. the 70 series.

Thanks,
78coupe

Why do you want the taller and narrower 70's?

Go with the 255/60-15. The wider look is what I would want.

Hi

Interesting tire, the Firehawk.
Awailable in all sizes between 225 and 275.
But speed index SR , how much is this ?

R for example is 210 KM/hour ( 130 Miles ).

My favorite source for tire information is http://www.tirerack.com/. If you just want information, go to their Tire Tech page (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tiretech.jsp. The speed rating table has both metric and English speeds.

When I bought tires for my '80, I did a search by tire size. I chose the factory option width for my car - 255/60R15. I then checked all 3 of the T-rated tires (the other 2 were S-rated) and did the side by side comparison.

Each tire has a specs table with a bunch of measurements. You were asking about having different tire sizes in front vs. back in a different CF thread. You can check the specs to find tires with approximately the same Overall Diameter.

I hope this helps.

Hi Gunther,

I see that you are in Europe as well, I'm in Belgium.

I have been looking for a higher speed rated white-letter tire over here, but haven't had much luck.

When looking at for example Tirerack in 255/60-15 they have S (=180kmh) or T (=190kmh) ratings.
The problem with these is that even if you don't drive the topspeed of your car, the tires need to be rated to at least this topspeed.

The only one that I had found, available in Belgium was the Goodyear Eagle GT+4, rated to V = 210 kmh, but the stopped making these...

So I don't know yet which to buy, still have all winter to decide though...

I've had the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires for a year now. Great tire and price.

Thanks for the replys. I was concerned that the 60's would leave too much room in the fender well but I do want the wider stance on the tire.......60" it is.
Thanks again,78coupe

Hi

@ Sonny

Stopped making the Goodyear GT+4 ?
It is still offered , at least in Germany, under http://REIFENDIREKT.DE.
And yes, it seems to be the only white letter tire with a such high speed rating and the M&S all weather qualification is OK for every C3, even those that need higher speed ratings.
I think the Yokohama also has this high speed rating and is a pure summer tire.
My problem is that the 255 is too large for the front on my non PS BB 68 and the nexz smaller Goodyear is the 225.
I would prefer a 235/70 front and 275/60 rear, both having same overall diameter and this are offered from FIREHAWK Indy 500.
Might need to order from USA.

Hi

Thanks for the link.

Early tires had their speed rating symbol shown "within" the tire size, such as 225/50SR16. Tires using this type of branding were not to have been produced after 1991.
225/50SR16 112 mph, 180 km/h
225/50HR16 130, 210 km/h
225/50VR16 in excess of 130 mph, 210 km/h

The FIREHAWK Indy is marked as SR15 . Does this mean it is an old tire produced b4 1991 ? Or just that it is an older style tire , but can still be new production, like 2006 ?

My '80 originally came with the 225/70/15s and I switched to the Cooper Cobra 255/60/15s. I like the wider look.

Here is another happy owner. After I replaced my dry rotted tires with the Firehawks last year, it was like I was driving a new car.

if you like the wider look you could have gone to the cobra GT 275/60/15, they fit well the 15x8 stock wheels...

I had the 255/60/15 but they rubbed in the front when doing a turn where the steering was at the extreme right or left. anybody else have this problem?
Also, I'm a bit skeptical of firestone after they had their big recall awhile back.

Firestone hasn't had a car tire problem since the big recall in the mid-70s. The light truck tire problem is an entirely separate issue...different designs, different production lines.

Hi Gunther,

thanks for the link, I had been looking at this site 6 months ago, and the tires wrere indeed there, then I heard on the forum here that they were discontinued, and when I checked they were gone. And now they are back... I hope they started making them again, and it's not old stock they found...

Good luck with finding some for your ride, nice ride by the way.

Maybe we will meet each-other next summer on a meeting.

see you, Sonny
