The car is making progress. I'm writing this post to document the paint progress. 2 weeks down 6 weeks to go.
The body was in fantastic shape under the paint. No previous repairs or wreck damage. The only items of any significance were the two holes on the rear quarter panels where the bumpers bolt and a small bonding area in the rear drivers side under the bumper that had just separated. Close ups of the repairs are included below.
They did strip the car with chemicals. They say they've done it this way for over 8 years and none of the cars have come back; they do some really high dollar C2 restorations. The first round of primer goes on Monday. They're using a polyester primer.
I could not wait to see my vette when I went to the paint shop. Its really surprising looking at the vette when its down bare like that.
Make sure they cover up your headers good when they do the painting. Keep the pics coming.
Thanks. Yeah, these guys are really on top of the details. They mask the engine compartment, headers and anything that might get sprayed. This has been a 1 year frame off so he's well aware that I'll be pretty PO'd with any overspray.
I love your car in black. I almost went with black because it looks so good but after about 6 black cars, including 2 vettes, I decided I needed a change. Very classy color though. You can't beat black.
If anyone is interested in a bigger view of the progress here's my website. It kinda goes in order.
it bothers me to see it picked up like that by the cross member.....esp with the engine in it.
congrats on getting to this stage though!!
Yeah that used to wig me out too but I've been working on this car for 3 years and always use the same spot to lift the car. The frame is rock solid and the cross member doesn't even have the slightest dimple. I've done this so many times I can't recall and these guys do Vettes all the time. In fact if you put jack stands on the frame you have to go behind the motor and the front of the car will flex down. I think they're doing it this way to make sure the panels stay in line when they sand.
Here's a little update on the paint. They sprayed the back of the doors today so I could approve the color. I love it but the pictures don't do it justice. It's darker than the pics appear. The finish is sticky/wet looking. The metalic just bursts at you in the direct sun. In shadows it looks like purple.
The paint is House of Kolor "Burple Kandy" over bright silver metalic.
JB's Corvette Specialists is doing the paint. I picked this color because I loved a Kandy Apple Red car they did earlier this year and I wanted the same type of paint in blue.
mind if I ask what the paint itself cost you? no worries if you don't wanna answer.
The metalic silver sealer, base coat silver metalic, and the Burple topcoat cost $930 from the paint supplier. I'm not sure how much he bought but he bought it in 1 quart containers so he can return any that he doesn't open and get some money back for me. It's pricy stuff but it is amazing. I was going to go with a DuPont color that was similar but I'm glad the body shop guy talked me into House of Kolor. There's no comparison to the two. The body panel I saw with the DuPont color was very nice and eye catching but the House of Kolor paint has a much more intense Kandy effect.
They sprayed the body and doors the last two days. Here are some progress pictures.
The Silver base coat was sprayed first followed by the Kandy Blue. The blue is even nicer than the pictures show. It was an overcast day and in the shade the color tends to look more purple.
Thanks! The color makes me a little nervous because of the "purple" effect in the shade. In the sun it's outstanding. I just need to get used to the purple when it's cloudy.
