Painting Grill on my 81'
I would like to freshing up the looks of the grills and get rid of the grayish color. Has anyone ever painted them and if so what type of paint?

Melting Slicks
I would use SEMS brand vinyl / plastic color. Get the satin black and it'll have a little shine to it.
Just do it when the air / surface temp is at least 70 degrees or it'll haze on you. I had the best results during spring and summer.

I don't know how it will work for you, but there is a product call back to black that works well on some things. I was going to use it on my 80's front grill, but ran out of time (my car is 20 miles from where I live). It worked well on other black plastic parts.

This stuff works real good, better than armorall and I use it all the time on all my dark trim. You have to reapply quite offen.I might have a pair of NOS grills in my stock room I'll let got for say $25.00 for the pair.

Great thread and perfect timing. I just cleaned my grills up the other day and noticed the black needed a touch-up. I'll wait until this Spring, when it thaws out here in Maryland, and give the vinyl spray a shot. Thanks

I've used a spray on plastic paint from Orchard supply, you need to use the plastic primer first. Worked great on some outdoor projects, never used on car parts, but plastic is plastic...

I ended up trying Krylon Fusion satin on them. Turned ou pretty good. I also cleaned up the lens and repainted the black part on them as well.

I use WD40 on the Black plastic parts on my 80 and it brings the black back to life. An old trick I learned from a friend engineer at Chrisler corp. They use these tricks when they have open house and they make their display cars look great. Another trick he showed me and in a pinch for time have used myself quite often is to spray furniture polish on a terrycloth rag and wipe your car down for a shine that you wont believe. It also seems to keep the dust off as well.

Sprayed the ones on my '81 with stock, off the self, satin black paint in a rattle can (acrylic???). I thoroughly cleaned the grilles with detergent & then used wire wool to get rid of any flaking stuff & provide a key, then sprayed a few coats of paint, without a plastic primer. Came out surprisingly well & still looks good 4 years on. I wish I could say the same about the parts of the car that I had professionally painted
If you can get it, Sperex Polyurethane paint (satin black) has been excellent for tarting up the old black parts.
