Default Side Pipe Legality

Someone told me the other day that having the exhaust exit the car in front of the rear tire was illegal in Louisiana. Does anyone know if this is true? I would love to have pipes but I dont want to be any more of a target to the local law than I already am. Has anyone anywhere been pulled over in their Vette because of side pipes being illegal in any way. Thanks, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Thanks, I'm lookin at the Hooker pipes which really show. Other than getting a ticket the only other thing I'm worried about is my 9yr old daughter burning her leg. I heard a real horror story last night that involved the smell of roasted flesh.

Connecticut was the only state (years ago) that gave any trouble to sidepipe cars afaik. Think it has now been worked out. Basically, the laws in most states do not say that they must exit behind the axle, only that they must exit behind the passenger comaprtment. Some newer F-150 pickups have dual pipes on the passenger side exiting in front of the right rear wheel and I am sure this is legal in all 50 states.

I believe forum member Bangkok Dean sells some very nice covers for Hooker side pipes. This summer I burnt my leg on a freind's Corvette Hooker pipes. It got my attention.... Your daughter will thank you for the covers!

I used to have the hookers on my car and yes, they will burn the hell out of you. With the factory style side pipes you don't have to worry about that.

In PA, the law is the exaust has to exit passed the farthest back WINDOW that opens.... So since our vettes only have sides, sipepipes exit behind the window so here there legal. My brothers van has sidepipes, and if anybody gives them trouble were just gona take out the opening windows in the back and just put glass there...

Comments as to the above postings:

(1) Yes the Hooker style headers will burn people's legs. However, as far as I know, once someone gets their leg burnt it never happens again.

(2)Duing the late 1960's and early 1970's "muscle" cars were the rage. (As compared to low performance SUV's wtih boom box systems today). There were people in those days that didn't like these cars, and Hooker style sidepipes would definately get police attention. However, in California, in 1967 and 1968 (?) you could order BB's with sidepipes (Kustom Headers, which looked like what we now call Hookers). An acquaintance of mine was constantly geting pulled over by the pollce and ticketed during these years. He had to continually take his dealers sales invoice to court to show that the headers were factory original. By the mid 1970's he never was ticketed again. From the mid 1970's, I have driven Corvettes with Hooker and factory sidepipes and never been bothered.

They will still burn when the engine is running even if coated. They just cool off faster. That is why I have heat shields from www.cobrastuff.com. What Bangkok Dean would call "cheese graters" but I couldn't wait.

Jet Hot Sterling coating. Not chrome but a good match for polished aluminum wheels.

You don't say what year your car is, so just a side note: if it is '75 or newer then side pipes would be illegal per federal law. Is illegal to remove the cat converters Now if that is enforced in LA may be a whole different story
