Air Cleaner Question
I figured I'd throw this out here...
The car is a 73 coupe LS4 454. I have a wrong 14" chrome air cleaner on it now and have no clearance issues. I want to put the correct dual snorkel one back on it. A friend of mine gave me two dual snorkels to try. I first tried one with my original setup, but it was REALLY hard to close the hood, so I had to put a smaller carb spacer in to lower the overall height of the carb. That seemed to be better, but I have to slightly push on the hood to get it to latch. I never had to do this before, since I always had the wrong air cleaner that was smaller. Now, with the dual snorkel and the rubber gasket setup, it seems snug. My question/concern is that with the air cleaner snug up against the hood, I'm afraid of the engine movement rubbing against the hood will damage the paint, causing it to crack, etc. Any ideas or suggestions? Is it OK for it be right up against the hood?
PS- the air cleaner can't really be lowered any further since it's already sitting on top of the EGR valve. Thanks.
Maybe this will help getting a visual:

you have the upper ring for a 350 sb. the 454 bb has an offset upper ring. the carb is in a different position on the bb and the offset allows the seal to line up with the hood. let me know if you find the correct upper ring. I have been looking for a year with no luck.

Gotcha. I know what you're saying. My friend who gave me the air cleaners weren't sure what motor they were for. So you're saying th upper ring actually drops back down around the outside of the air cleaner body to allow more clearance?

Damn, that's pretty.
Place the air filter lid on upside down.
the air cleaner lid is not what is hitting. you description is correct. the offset ring for the big block compensates for the different carb position. lots of sb rings out there but the bb ring is hard to find.
is this black on red car you have been trying to sell for $33K. I hope you get it because I have a 73 bb also. It is a factory silver on black. I want to repaint in red and was worried that it may hurt value. looks like your experience is bearing that out. But, a great looking car.

I don't think that the color change is hurting the sale so much as the current state of the market as a whole. No one who has looked at the car has said "gee, I'd buy it if it was the orig color". Things have been super soft the last 6-8 mos. If yours is silver, I wouldn't mess with it. It's nothing like this car was being Elkhart Green/saddle, which was a lousy color combo. I'm putting the car in the RM auction in Ft Lauderdale in Feb, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the air cleaner info!
I have some buddies in Ft. Lauderdale. I will try to get them out to look at the car. I was just there in September riding harleys to to Key West with them. Good luck with air cleaner search. If I find a source,I will let you know.
