Default Broken Wheel Stud Question?

Opinions about driving a short distance with only 4 wheel nuts using standard wheels?

I broke a left front wheel stud when checking tightness on the lug nuts using a hand wrench. I was just ensuring the nuts were still tight.

I'd like to get this driver to the corvette shop that R&R'd the brakes recently .... that's about 20 miles away. Thanks.

I wouldn't trust it, for the other stud to snap someone probably torqued it beyond elastic, the reason you snapped it is because in plastic deformation you can't torque it down, it feels " loose" until it snaps. What guarantees someone didn't mess up the other 4? Check them with a tq wrench to see if they can still be torqued down.

TT is correct, check the others. I found the original lugnuts and lugs are better then the current ones. Mostly the lug nuts today strip out very quickly. If you have the originals on the car then I wouldn't worry as much. I've driven on 4 originals for years and some track time as well. The fronts are easy to replace as well.

I agree, if you can't reach touque don't drive it. otherwise 4 good lugs are plenty.

I would however have 5 new lugs installed. In fact I would do them all.
The lugs on my 69 were pretty sorry looking.

an upgrade to 1/2" studs isn't bad idea, as long as you're in there...
