I'm a new guy still in the planning stages of a future frame off restoration. What is the best way to treat frame rust? It seems that most people on this forum use some sort of blast medium to strip surface rust. What do you do about the internal rust? I assume that the inside of the box tubing would suffer from similar, if not worse rust than the outside. Depending on the severity of the surface rust, should I consider reinforcing the frame on the assumption of compromised integrity?
I just finished working on my frame this weekend. For me the decision to blast was based on the condition of the frame. My frame was in excellent condition. Nothing but surface rust on mine. Even the mount bolts came off without any problems (except the rear ones, but from what I hear those are always a problem). I wire wheeled all the surface rust off and then painted with Eastwood's Rust encapsulator. I will be following that up with a coat of their chasis black. I'll see if I can post some pics later. For the interior of the frame I was thinking of getting Eastwood's interior spray kit which has a long wand for reaching into the frame, however, since our frames are completely encased I don't know how much of the interior can be reached. There are very few access holes. Does anybody else have any experience with this kit? Is it possible to reach all areas of interior frame with it?
The middle part of the frame is where water will cause the most dammage on these cars, especially at the rear kickups. There are holes there sufficient to get a wand in there to spray the Eastwood stuff to take care of that area.
My frame was in great shape too, only a little surface rust, nop corosion. I used a power washer to clean it and wiped it down with laqure thinner and painted it by brush with an encapsulating paint, KBS I think.
If you have significant surface rust or any real corosion I would blast it or get it dipped and treated that way
