I was wondering if anyone has had any success dying the carpet in thier car.
Mine is black, and a little faded, but its in good condition. I have seen people do it using rit dye, but it made the carpet stiff and rough.
Any thoughts on this?
I did a dye job on my '71 lemans back in high school using the rattle cans of SEM vinyl dye and it came out fine, never used the RIT brand. I would spray a coat then as it was drying 'flex' the carpet to free the fibers from each other. Took a saddle carpet to black and you could never tell it wasn't originally black.

Get a good carpet dye and it does make it look new again works best on black
I used Rit black and never had a problem. I put it in a spray bottle and sprayed it on the faded area as well as blended it into the non faded areas. I then used a scrub brush to work it into the carpet let it dry for a few hours and then worked it with the brush again.
It worked great. I first did it 5 years ago and this year it needed some touch up in a couple of places. Carpet remains soft and plyable. My 70 has the deluxe cut pile carpet so that is all I can speak of but it is nice and easy and looks great. You may have to give a second coat in some places but once done you can't tell what is dyed .
I never thought of the spray bottle method. I used a sponge and probably got it on too heavy.
I will try the spray bottle method when it warms up a little.
Thanks.
