Hi hi hi!
Does anyone know the secret to making music sound good in a '76 vette?
At present, I have a tinny pair of tweeters in the dash and am toying with the idea of making a speaker unit for behind the seats, and possibly putting a pair in the kick panels.
However, I have noticed that the space behind my kick panels often gets damp, so I'm hesitant!
Any ideas what to do please let me know!!
Thanks!
Replace dash speakers (4x6) and upgrade with better quality. OEM kick panel speakers (68 & 69) had moisture shields on them. You could do the same and keep water off the backs of them.
I have a 75 with the a similar problem. Actually only one of the speakers in the dash works. I think I'm going to get a new radio/CD player to replace the old radio and put two new spekers in small boxes in the back. It doesn't have to be a great audio system, just something to listen to occasionally. Heck, with the t-tops out and rolling down the hiway I doubt I'll be able to hear much anyway
You can replace the dash w/new 4x6 or just put a better set of larger speakers in the rear. I did this w/a 66 coupe and the sound was great. You don't need the tiny front speakers or 4 speakers for good stereo sound. You can buy a componet speakers system that will blow you away. Check out crutchfield.com If not a componet system buy a speaker box/bar that fits in the rear of your car & put in a good set of 6x9's. ecklers sells the box. If you buy the one w/the speakers already in it you may want to upgrade to a better speaker & amp G/L
Get the AIM and take a long look at the various mounting points. Most folks miss the one up under the dash then can't figure why the pad won't come out.
2 4x6's in the dash, careful putting the new pad back in, take your time.
2 small tweeters in the upper corners of the windshield, wire them to the dash 4x6's leave the pillar moulding off till the pad is back.
2 4x6's in the kick panels, put a moisture barrier on top of them.
2 6x9's in the rear compartment, up in the corners, they won't be in the way of the t-tops, use the small aftermarket enclosures to put them in, crutchfield and others sell them.
1 sub woofer in the storage compartment, I took the compartment lid off and traced it on plywood, covered it with carpet, looks awesome.
Also, I wired a small sony amp (40amp) in for the front speakers, I snuk it in behind the map pocket and put a larger amp (80) in the rear compartment on the back wall, t-tops still fit.
Sounds great and I can almost hear the radio over the sidepipes ...
An oblong speaker will always be outdone by a round speaker of the same size.
Ditch the dash speaker location. Mount a component set in the kick panels, using a foam baffle from Crutchfield...to protect against moisture. I believe 6.5" mids will fit, depending on the magnet, but 4.25" speakers and an active crossover driven silk tweeter and you'll have great sound. Make or buy some small enclosures to house some 6.5" rear speakers, not 6x9's, and if you don't want to do another component set, get a pair of 2-way speakers.
I can suggest some cheaper component sets if you don't like the price of the CDTs. I use a set a lot that I really like. It's inexpensive and they produce great sound.
