82 shifter knob removal????

82 shifter **** removal????
HEllo!
I am replacing the leather shifter boot on my 82 automatic; cannot find any info in my books as to the removal of the ****. I unscrewed the release button but don't know if the **** uncrews or is pressed on.

Does anyone know if you can place a late model automatic shifter ball and button on the C3 shifter? I like the looks and designs available for the C5 and C6 automatic ***** and would like to upgrade the chrome ball on my 82.
