Default Calling all Britts

I have noticed over the months a few members from the UK and wondered if you could supply me with some info on who you use for insurance in the UK and what you pay? Do you use the usual suspects or a specialist company? Collector insurance with limited milage or just regular coverage? I am living in Indianna at the moment but the time will come when we return home to Wales and I intend to bring my vette and maybe my truck back with me. Some insight into what its going to cost me and what problems I am likely to face would be much appreciated

Talking about going home makes me miss it

But there are plenty of firms which offer classic car insurance,

price wise it depends on your circumstances,

yearly mileage,is car garaged,alarm fitted,tracker fitted,etc,etc

Classic car insurance would work for the vette but the truck is a 2004 Dodge Ram so I guess I need someone who will insure imported cars ( the whole left hand drive thing etc)
Thanks for the input any way

Nick , If you can find any info it would be good , It could be a while before I go home so don't worry too much , I had just noticed a few britts on the posts and wanted an idea as to what was available. We have only been out here for a couple of years now so I know all of the usual insurance companies for normal cars ( Direct Line etc) but I have never dealt with imports before.

BBC is flying 3 of us into Manchester the 24th of this month, staying for a week( near Blackpool,Wisham,Preston). A fellow there has a Huey( the only one in the UK) BBC has been doing a Documentry on. He researched it,found out it was in my unit (129th assault helicopter company) in Vietnam, when i was there. It now looks like it did when it sat on our flight line.Anyway,They want to interview 3 of us. Want me to bring you something back? My wife wants crumpets (she is an Aussie ,but London born) I live near the airport in Indy( Avon),so no trouble.

After you sort out the insurance,

keep it in mind you need to get both cars ready

and put them through the sva test then have them registered, mot'd

and road taxed.

Oh crumpets!!! Dont get me started Thanks for the offer , not sure you will be able to bring any food back , the airlines have gotten all nervous lately and you can carry on virtually nothing ( your only hope is to stick in your lugagge but they have a serious sense of humour failure if they find it. )
My parents have just been out for Xmas but they didn't bring anything as its not worth the risk , Mum used to bring OXO cubes , you know the stock cubes for gray etc but they stopped here bringing those last time !!

Manchester airport is only about 1.5 hrs from my house on wales , wish I was coming with ya!!

Have a great time while your there.

Yes , I looked at building a Cobra Kit car before we came out here and so I knew about the lights , test , MOT etc but the insurance was a new one for me. I know that you can get Kit car insurance but not sure about foreign cars - it must be available as there are vettes in the UK - I was just looking for some contacts as a place to start.

I use a company called RH classic car insurance, www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk

They are cheap and can offer a fixed value insurance as well as salvage rights. In the event of a major acciedent etc, you get your fixed value money as well as the car or whats left of it after its written off.

I think Im paying around £180 for a fully comprehensive policy, 5k miles, £12.5k value, complete with the cherished salvage.

from their web site,

Benefits Include:

The most competitive and comprehensive policy

Cherished Salvage return clause available on all vehicles over 20 years old (free of charge)
Breakdown & Recovery Service All policies include vehicle recovery on a European wide basis
Agreed Value policies issued without additional cost (according to age of vehicle)
Instalments spread over 10 months by direct debt facilities
Unlimited Windscreen Cover Nationwide replacement windscreen service (subject to £50 excess)
Uninsured Losses - Legal Assistance Cover up to £50,000
Personal Accident Cover up to £5,000 while travelling in any vehicle
Rallies Cover Automatic cover included for club rallies (excluding racing, pacemaking and speed testing)
Dismantled Parts Cover

Cant be bad!!!

Hi,
Yes, but I'll have to get back to you on the details. I've got insurance policies coming out of my ears & have forgotten who I'm currently with for the Vette as I changed last year. The price is excellent for a "Classic American" if you get a specialist (collector) policy, don't mind a limited mileage clause (eg. 3000, 5000, 7000) & keep it garaged overnight. My 1st years insurance (in 2001) cost me £120 (about $200) fully comp with all the bells & whistles. Running a classic American vehicle is cheap from an insurance perspective. My daily driver is an old Ford Granada Mk II (remember them?), which is 1 year younger than the Vette, & the insurance cost on it is TWICE that of the Vette. I'll dig out the policy over the weekend & get back to you.

An alternative (where people who posses good memories hang out ) is to get on the CCCUK website (http://www.corvetteclub.org.uk/) & ask on there. There's a few companies that insure Vettes here under specialist policies & they're all known to CCCUK members.
Or, if you want, I can send you a copy of Classic American magazine, where you'll find most insurers advertise, so you can call/email them directly?

Crumpets? I'd offer to send some out but there's 2 problems:
1) I'd probably eat them myself (with loadsa butter)
2) With the speed the postal service can run at, they probably wouldn't taste too good when they arrive

edit: These are my current insurers: http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/
but I'll have to get back to you with the cost. I did some checking before switching to them & they seem to be well regarded, give competitive quotes, flexible cover & don't stop answering the phone if you are unlucky enough to need to claim.

UKPAUL - Thanks a lot for the details , much appreciated , It could well be a year or two before I come home with the vette so I may well pick your brains again nearer the time. I have made a note of the web site to check out then.

Where abouts are you located in the UK ? My UK house is in Mid Wales but I was born in Kent. We are Living in central Indianna at the moment , Out here on a 3-5 year deal with my wifes Job. Its been a great experience living over here and good education for the kids too , the people are really welcoming and friendly but I still can't help missing the green green grass of home ( and the crumpets )

Hi,
No problem. I'm right on the Surrey/Berkshire/Hampshire border (just behind Sandhurst RMA, 5 miles from Farnborough). I grew up in this area & have seen it change from small villages set in pine forest/heathland/army ranges (the opening battle in Gladiator was filmed nearby) into a built up, expensive & crowded look-alike suburban area with all my favorite roads now festooned with 30mph signs, traffic calming measures, or having had all the fun bends removed so that people who can't drive don't crash!
I went to mid-Wales for the 1st time about 4 years ago. Beautiful place, I can see why you're missing it

My Mom still sends me care packages.....tea, biscuits (Jaffa cakes, digestives) and anything from cadbury..........used to get beer aswell, but I can get Boddingtons, Newcastle, Harp etc around here now.

Wrexham is less than 1hr from my place , closest town to us is Newtown or Welshpool - My place is out in the sticks a bit .

You can get the Jaffa's and Digestives in my local Meijer in the Foreign foods section - thats if you are prepared to pay $5 for half a pack

Its good to get in touch with some folks from home , when I eventually get back there with the vette , we should all meet up and take a run out to the coast , It'l make a pretty sight , a whole bunch of vettes roaring down the road , will definately turn a few heads
