Replace cam shaft ???
Opinions please. I have torn way deeper into my 74 Big Block than I intended to do. Imagine that! With the radiator and core support out now, I have tons of room to work. I have decided to replace the timing chain / gears.
Should I re-cam it while I am that close?
If yes....can anyone recommend a cam that is "slightly" stronger than stock that will work with stock compression heads and auto trans?

If I was that close I would do it - there should be quiet a few cams on the market that are better than the stock one. First find out what you have, is it the stock cam or a stock replacement or did one of the previous owners install a hotter cam ??
That close? I'd call someone like CompCams and tell them what I've got, what I want and ask for their advise. From where you are, a cam and a set of lifters is no big deal. Go with a double row HD timing chain whatever you do. The crank gear can be a little stubborn. Find a piece of pipe that just fits over the crank, heat the new gear in the oven (I use 300* for about 20 minutes) and be quick. Locktite on the cam bolts too.
Nows the time Replace cam ,Lifters keep pushrods in oder the way they come out, check to make sure they are not bent (roll on flat glass)use cam lube. you said timing gear and chain correct ? Did all the same to my 77 vette had a wiped lobe on the cam needed done You should not have to many problems as alot of people can help you .get A mild cam .The motor heads in the forum Im sure can give you all the stuff to look for.
