mine was the same way and it was the cam lobe worn on the door handle. If this is the problem you would be wise to buy a good one rather than the low dollar chinese replacement.

The ones I got on Ebay were from Vette part sellers...all of whom stated their parts, $80 for one side latch, was an OEM original.

Thats about right. The 25$ ones are the ones you don't want. Even the ones in the GM OEM box are junk but they are better. I had mine powdercoated and had to throw away 2 new ones. One melted in the 350 degree bake oven and another outgassed so bad it totally screwed up the coating. Real high quality metal.
I dropped a nut and my wife could hear me all the way in the house!
I sat on a nut once and the neighbor came over to see what was wrong. Yes, I was folded over clutching myself like a little girl who's puppy just got run over.
NOW, you're all scaring me . Maybe I'll take it to a body shop and have them do it.
It's really not that bad. Keep a small stool there, all your tools, and go slow and easy. Take your time and do one part at a time. Take pictures so you know where everything goes...and just stay at an easy slow pace.
