Getting ready for the upcoming show car season, so I purchased (what I heard is the best buffer) a Porter-Cable Model 7424 buffer. Want to get the best look.... Never used one, but watched alot of car guys using them at shows, auctions, etc. Now the question...any "tricks of the trade"I need to learn...other than don't let the buffer burn the paint....

The Porter 7424 is a dual action random orbital polisher not a buffer, as in "color sand and buff". You would be hard pressed to burn the finish using it. Get the assortment of foam pads, cleaning, polishing, final glaze pad etc. I have one and it is spectacular at polishing and maintaining paint finishes....
I borrowed one from a co-worker a few years ago. He told me to be careful not to let the power cord get in the way of the shaft/pad.
Guess what...I wrapped the cord around the shaft within the first few seconds of use. Had to get a new cord installed at the local Porter Cable repair center.
I own one of these, and it can't be beat for high quality-yet safe buffing. The ONLY way you could really damage the paint is by throwing it at your car. Make sure you get a bunch of different pads, some High Quality polishes and wxes, and go to town!
Many high end detailing places use these, the PC is the way to go, unless the paint needs to be buffed with a rotory, which CAN burn the paint if one doesn't know what their doing...
There are a ton of care tech tips in the "general Corvette" Forum tab in the "Care Car Products" folder, it's another great forum area on this site. Many with specific reference to the Porter Cable unit.
Practice on your kids car or your daily driver first.
I have one easy to use, you really can't burn the paint. Choose the right pad and put the wax or polish on the car first. Do not turn on until the buffer is on the car start at 3 or 4 then move up to 5 or 6 no higher. Clean the pads as soon as you are finished. then post pic's
Soap and water. The best tip is to mark each cutting pad with a # and only use it for that product. Wax and sealant pads can be mixed around. Cutting pad still hold the abrasive after being washed.

I believe this is what Griot's Garage sells and he sells quality stuff, but don't buy it from them shop the prices. I personnally bought mine as a random orbit sanding kit from Coastal Tool.com and bought the foam pad attachment.
