Been doing some research on my matching numbers 80' that is currently undergoing restoration. An engine swap is in the plans, but I recently discovered that there were only 3,221 LG4s produced (only in 80). I did not know this. Will still likely continue with the swap (embarrassing to not be capapble of a burnout), but will definitely put the LG4 in storage when gutless, oil embargo era powered corvettes are in vogue again. Any one else out there have the LG4? Please share your knowledge on the subject.
The 305 was for Calif. It was thought at the time that the engine may need to be smaller for better gas mileage esp. for the C4 which is why the CFI & TPI were designed for the 305, which was commonly used in other cars.
The '80 305 LG4s came about only to meet California emissions requirements. They were the first computer controlled Corvette engines. They are one year only and all had automatic transmissions.
The 350 was emissions certified in California and available again with the 1981 models.

I recently purchased the correct quadrajet carb for the LG4. I bought it on eBay. It said it was for an '80, then when I got it it had a TPS and mixture control connections and I can't use it now.
The 305 engine in the '80 California Vettes gets a bad rap as being the weakest motor. Actually, its 180 HP was equal to the '76 and '77 L-48s and more than the '75 L-48 at 165 HP.
My 73 had 190 horse, no tire melter, but if you want to stay with the original block a set of high compression pistions a forged crank and rods a nice cam and some head work would move that car along rather nicely.
Even w/ the same HP as a 350 w/ all else same you can expect to get beat because the 350 will have more power under the curve so they are correct the 305 is weaker.
At least you got a V8.
A mild 305 can make over 300 HP.
