Default gear **** and push button removal

hey guys...I am new to this stuff and just learning. I recently purchased a 78 vette and am doing some minor repairs and touch ups. I for the life of myself cannot get the gear shift **** and/or push button off. I have new chrome **** ordered but need to figure this out. It will turn counterclockwise for a while...then it stops...so does the push button. can anyone share the light?

They both just unscrew(counter-clockwise). You need to take the pushbutton off first for the **** to come off. There's a spring in there you don't want to lose, but it's not compressed enoughto go flying across the room or anything.

is there any way to damage it if forced? It seems hard to turn after a few trips around! (the push button I mean)!

if the threads are screwed up or corroded, then there's always a chance of breaking something. I thought the button was plastic, but can't remember off the top of my head, and since there's no real way to get any penetrating oil in there i'd just keep applying pressure till it gives. I guess you could try to cut it off carefully and replace it too, but that seems like a lot of work. new ones are only $10
