Here's a fool proof single amp system that incorporates everything you may want in a small setup.
#1 - Modern head unit with amp outs.
#2 - Component sets mounted in the kick panels. (XO Speaker & Tweeter)
#3 - Large four channel amp mounted in larger storage bin or on back wall/bulkhead.
#4 - Single 10" sub in a small sealed enclosure in back.
Run the two front component sets off of channels 1 & 2, and bridge the channels 3 & 4 to power the sub.

There you go.
If you are going to put one 10" in the back, you might as well put two. It will take the same amount of space. I have 2 in my '69. My 1200 Watt Amp was less than $200 and is behind the driver's seat. You can put a 5 1/4" near the driver's head and another near the passenger's head. Two more can go near you and your passenger's feat. The plastic panels that were cut could all be replaced and put stock if I so desired (which I don't). My head unit is under my glove bag (so to not cut my dash panel) and have an iPod connection. I promised to take pictures a while ago. I will try to when I get home.
Hey, I gotta ask. Where'd you find the carpet to match the interior for your boxes? The best I could find doesn't match that good.
If your using new after market carpet it's most likely ACC brand. You can go to thier website www.accmats.com and order as much as you like in that same color.
I just ordered some black last night, I know I'm being **** because black is pretty easy to match up with other brands......but I was looking for the same texture/feel as well as color.

The whole purpose to the single sub is not just space but power. Two subs of any real competency would need an amp just for them. A single amp can run off of channels 3 and 4 bridged. A pair would not sound good like this.
Sure, a second amp is a way to go in fact that's how I do it. BUT...not everyone has the desire or space to mount two amps, and one is easier to hide than two.
Here's what the back of my 82 looks like now. Being able to open the hatch on the back made the installation easier. Your 76 would likely be more inconveneint.
I didn't cut or modify any of the original parts so restoring everything to orginal condition is quite easy.
Good luck.

I agree, not that easy on my 76, radio won't fit in dash with replacing basel or cutting it out. No place for speakers in back like an 82.
Very nice craftsmanship. The vent is a really nice touch.
Thanks.
Was wandering through Home Depot one day and saw the cold air duct grille. It was not exactly what I had in mind (more along the line of a speaker type grille), but it did the trick and let me get on with the job.
The power amp just would not quite fit inside the profile of the utility compartment (came above the surface by about 3/4"). That is why I used the oak frame and lid, otherwise I would have just used a replacement plastic frame made for the car and tried to keep more to the look of the original carpeted compartment.

I know what you mean about the back for speakers - my first vette was a '77 and the flat back window and low rear deck area would make it awkward (but not impossible) to do something back there.
As for the bezel - kept my original one for that day (if ever) the car gets sold and someone wants the original parts. Bought the replacement bezel at Eckler's (not many carry the brown bezel of the 82CE) used masking tape on the face to mask out the DIN opening and used the dremel tool with a cut-off wheel to make the opening. It worked out quite nicely, so I hope that does not deter you - you have so many more choices this way. Back in '83, when I bought the '77, the first thing I did was put in a Jensen deck, but that was back when many aftermarket units fit the stock opening.

My 1 Amp handles 1200 Watts and the two subs sound great. I really wouldn't want anything any louder.
some very nice craftsmanship on both setups pictured above...wow i am embarassed of mine. i was much less elaborate buying a 15"sub with built in amp with a coupla 6X9's mounted as a removable unit. I bought the 15" online and sadly i can't get the roll away cover to clear the top so i can't use it..i will post my simple setup thru photobucket just for the sake of it, as i said i'm embarassed..i do still have use of my storage compartment which is good, i also upgraded my dash speakers which are still 6X4 "factory" size..sounds great! http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...Project046.jpg
I'll post mine in the next month or so, I'm waiting on it to warm up a bit.
But here is what I'm putting in my 82
Kenwood EZ500 CD Player
Kenwood 5-1/4" two-ways (in the kick location)
Kenwood Tweeters (in the dash)
Kicker Comp 10" subwoofers (2)
Kicker KX120.2 (front stage)
Kicker KX400.2 (subwoofers)
I've built a sealed enclosure for the two 10's that sits right behind the battery/compartment door. I'm going to build a 1/2" mdf amp rack / trimplate covered in carpet that will make everything look built in. Highlighted with painted torch red accents to match my exterior. I'll still be able to lay my tops in there if needed....it'll just rest on the box...I'll have to come up with some sort of strap. I wan't have my tops with me most times anyways., car won't go out if it's going to rain.
I ordered two yards of matching black carpet from ACC so it's exact.
You can see my webpage for some other stuff (non-vette) that I have done in the past.
