Default Proper electrical wirirng.

I need to replace my 2 power door lock harnesses with the repair harness,
what would be the proper way to wire this up? Should I solder it then use the heat shrink rap or just use the crimp style connectors..

Thanks

Tim

Either method is fine. I would use heat-shrink with either method.

I'm not a fan of crimp splices. Looks kinda bubba like. Solder and heat shrink.

There are no solder joints in the original wiring. They are solderless crimp type connectors.

Except there is a BIG difference between production line crimps and what you can do with the simple hardware store terminals and crimp tools.

If you use the same terminals, and the same crimping tool, the difference is what?

As an electrical engineer... I despise crimp connectors. Yea they work... but they're worthless in my mind.

You can wipe your *** with newspaper, but I'll stick with the TP. (props to he who can name the owner of this quote)

I just had to repair an intermittant hei pickup problem.

The fix is to solder the crimped connection at the module connector.

Solder fix is forever.

25 years not bad for crimped.

I understand that. I have been IBEW 28 years. I just don't believe the best advice for repairing a simple harness is "Rewire the car with Lietz silver wire with Teflon jacket. Use Eutectic solder at all joints."

Proper solder connections are an acquired skill. The average Joe can buy T&B connectors and the proper crimping tool, and do good repairs for years.

I am not arguing with the validity of the statements. I just believe some advice here is SO over the top.

On a lighter note:
I knew a guy thqat redid his boat with solder but it was acid core. He then used it on the ocean here for about a year.
He was always chasing elec gremlins.

If I knew the wire guage, had the right size crimps and a very good crimp tool, I would crimp. If any of that is in doubt, soldering would then be my choice.

Crimps are for Bubba. If you want it to last and not corrode, use solder and heat shrink.

Just like everything, application is the answer.

Solder for electronics is standard practice. For sound work it is preferred. Same for avionics, yada yada.

FYI: All major power cables and control wires in major power staions are crimped. Power cables are crimped with 6 tons of pressure.
Signal wires are crimped with a hand tool.

Failure rate is almost non-existent. All us Bubbas do our best to prevent failure. Solder connections are Forebidden by most specs.

If you want to solder every connection in your car, knock your socks off.

Is a good crimp connection adequate for repairing a simple power window harness. It's FINE when done right.
