i bought a new carpet set for my 77 last weekend at the corvette/chevy expo in houston. my question is has anyone ever put the new carpet over the old carpet, using the old carpet for soundproofing/insulation? the old carpet isn't that bad and i didn't buy the stuff to put under it. also, do you glue the new carpet down or should it just lay flat? thanks. dabrogger
any suggestions or hints on doing this job would also be appreciated.
AH no never have. You are going to more then likey remove the old carpet. Did the new carpet come with the padding? You will also have to buy some adhesive because you will have to use it in some areas like in the back.
tell you what the new carpet will fit alot better if you take the time and remove the old one.and just maybe someone already put padding on the floor already and just reuse it. plus most new carpet comes with padding and that silver paper is not that expensive. since i own a 77 vet myself i want your job to be done right.
definitely remove old carpet, as previously mentioned, some areas will have to glued vertically. take a little time to do the job right and you will be happy with the results. good luck on this project.
pull your carpet, if no insulation installed definitely buy automotive insulation. it glues down and also the new carpet glues down. they have an aerosol glue specifically for it. insulating my floorboard was by far my best upgrade restoring my '79. insulate under your center console too & go as far up your firewall as you can, i pulled my heater box and dash....i am not a vendor i am a driver, not promoting anything, the small roll at this vendor will do your floor to under the seats. i insulated all the way back to my speakers and am totally happy, not a sweat box anymore and road noise is much much better, once your done and take a drive when you get out you will kneel and kiss your freshly insulated floorboard. http://www.lobucrod.com/
