You'll find tons of info in the "car care products" section of the "General Corvette" forum.
Buy a Porter Cable 7242, get some Lake Country 6.5" pads, Megueir's #80, Megueir's High Tech Wax, a clay system. Clay first, apply #80 on setting 5 then remove by hand, apply HTW on setting 3 and remove, reapply HTW and remove. Stand back and admire for 2 minutes then go a drive to show off your work!
i didnt even know there was a car care section here. i just asked over there what i can do when working with old crap paint. hopefully they actually offer suggestions and not "get a new paintjob".

Find/Borrow/Buy a video called "How to use the PC for Showcar Results". PC in this case is the Porter Cable 7242 I referenced in my first post. This guy takes a '60 Tuxedo Black Vette to a nice finish. Starts by rolling it out of the garage into the sun and showing all of the swirls and scratches, then moves back into the garage and turns it into a sweet finish. His techniques helped me.
