I'm in the middle of some rear end work (strut rods, rear diff cover, vb&p spring) and I'm having trouble removing the rear shock mount bracket. The bolts on the shock and shock mount mount have been removed but I'm having trouble removing the shock mount itself. Before I start wailing on it I thought I'd check to see if there was some trick to it as I don't want to destroy it with a hammer. I soaked the entire area in penetrating oil today and will try again tomorrow.
I was able to tap mine out with a hammer without too much trouble. That said, I believe the Vette parts places sell a "tool" (just looks like a big nut to me) to get them off. I assume you thread the big nut on and then wail on it with the hammer. The nut keeps you from damaging the threads.
The strut rod has a inner sleeve that rust-welds itself to the shock mount. One option is to sacrify the strut rods - if you plan on installing the adjustable rods.
When I disassembled mine I cut the strut rod end with a dremel and then burnt the rubber with a propane torch. Then the inner sleeve was accessible. I cut that sleeve with my Dremel and then sprayed the PB blaster between the sleeve and the shock mount.
I was able to safe one of the two shock mounts. These mounts are $50 each, not really cheap

When I did mine I went to the local hardware store and bought a 3/8" NPT thread pipe cap. About $1.50 plus tax.
Put it on the end until it bottomed out and used a to tap it out.
No damage whatsoever to the lower shock mounts.
Only took a few minutes between both sides and they looked like they'd never been removed. I did soak them both down with PB blaster once a night for about a 3 days before getting into the job.
It also helps a bunch if you take the tension off of them by jacking up on the suspension some, then procede with what was suggested before, good luck its a sucky job most times,,,Peace,,,Moosie
