Default flywheel

If a 454 engine, with automatic trans, was balanced with a particular flywheel, and then that flywheel needs changed, does the engine have to be torn down and rebalanced? Are all the 454 flywheels balanced the same? And all I need to do is buy another flywheel?

The automatics use a flexplate with ring gear, much different in appearance and weight than the flywheel/ring gear of a manual trans car.

454 engines are externally balanced, 427 engines are internally balanced.

Yes all 454 flywheels are balanced the same. Actually called a flex plate with a automatic. Just buy one specifically for the 454 as it will have the correct weight added to it. 427`s will be incorrectly balanced for the 454.

You need to know if the engine was internally balanced. Some machine shops balance 454's internally, even though they were not done that way at the factory.
