Default state inspection - San Antonio

looking for somebody to do a state inspection on my 79. no emissions checks in San Antonio BUT some inspection stations still insist you have working emissions controls on ALL cars newer than '74. others let it slide. need info on someone who will inspect with all emissions removed. you can PM me if you prefer. thanks.

I took my catless 76 to "Mac's Express Lube" which is on Valley Hi, right outside the Lackland gate. They never even looked under the car.

Just run down to the tx dept of transportation and get antique plates five years will cost you $50 dollars and no state inspection required and unless you are driving crazy the police will not bother you.

texas does not check emissions on cars more than 23 years old. For the mere $12 for the inspection, I would be amazed if they did more than check the horn and wipers.

i resorted to putting year of manufacture plates on and registering the car as an antique to get around this. the last time i tried to get it inspected the A** hole failed the car and said it had to have all emissions equipment on the car to pass. it didn't have to work, just be on the car. that steamed me.

always worried about police stopping me although i guess i'd tell them i'm on my way to a corvette club meeting, a rally, or taking in for service, etc.

would really like to have regular plates again though.

I work for the State of Texas.

It's my job to find inspection stations that are not following the rules and fine them and put them out of business.

Thanks for the lead!

Just Kidding.

This is a funny thread. If you've been to SA, most of the cars are not registered or they are from Mexico. Don't sweat the inspection, any quicky lube place will inspect it. Just go on Saturday when they are busy and they are trying to work cars through fast.

The last inspection that I had on my Vette before I started a frame off was at Jiffy Lube at Bandera & 410. The only reason they opened the hood was to look at the engine. They didn't even check the head or brake lights.

From the Texas DOT web site for safety inspections:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/insp...ejectsubmit=Go

20.14 Exhaust Emission System. The owner or operator of any new motor vehicle or new motor vehicle engine beginning with the model year 1968 equipped with an exhaust emission system shall maintain the exhaust emission system in good operable condition and shall use it at all times that the motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine is operated. The owner or operator of the motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine shall not remove or intentionally make inoperable within the state of Texas the exhaust emission system or any part thereof, except where the purpose of removal of the exhaust emission system or part thereof is to install another exhaust emission system or part thereof, which is intended to be equally effective in reducing atmospheric emissions from the vehicle or engine.

The exhaust emission system was installed by manufacturers of motor vehicles beginning with model year 1968. The inspection of the exhaust emission system will apply only to those vehicles that are equipped with such a system. The following exhaust emission systems will be inspected if installed as original equipment by the manufacturer: thermostatic air cleaner, exhaust gas recirculation system, positive crankcase ventilation system, air injection system, evaporative emission system, and/or catalytic converter.

If installed as original equipment by the manufacturer, the catalytic converter will be considered a part of the exhaust emission system on all 1984 and later model vehicles. It will be inspected as a part of the exhaust system on prior to 1984 model vehicles.

So they are to check that the equipment is in place. Just that they don't look for catalytic converters any further back than '84.

Another tid-bit regarding sale of a car in Texas:
http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/implemen...ing.html#tamp3

Texas law prohibits any person from selling, offering for sale, leasing, or offering to lease any vehicle not equipped with all emission control systems or devices in good operable condition. Violators are subject to penalties under the Texas Clean Air Act of up to $25,000 per violation. Buyers are advised to have the vehicle checked for all required emission control devices prior to purchasing a new or used vehicle.

Note that they don't state any age restrictions.

I just registered mine as an Antique. What bothers me now is there is
nothing on the windshield nor a plate on the front. I can just see the
PS Troupers making u turns before they see my Antique plate on the back.

Even with antique plates you still need two (front and rear) unless the antique plate is a dealers plate So that trooper can still stop you for no front plate.

[Editoral: since the leg is in session, contact you reps and request that they change the law to only require one plate.]

You are required to have 2 plates if you use year correct plates and the law requuired 2 plates. I think in the early 50's oly 1 plate was required. So most cars will require 2 plates if registered as an antique and using correct year plates.

The exception to this is if you just register it as an antique and use the plate issued by the DMV. They only give you 1 plate for the rear! Go figure!

I run an Antique plate in the back and NHRA plate in the front. I don't think you have to sweat the law unless you are breaking it. If your driving 100 mph, your probably just going to get a ticket for driving 100 mph, not removing your emissions equipment.

I got popped for the same thing at the local Jiffy Lube. I laughed as I don't know anyone that has a working e-brake on a Vette. Went another place and got passed no issues.

In this age of computors and instant info, I'm surprised that Texas doesn't have all the stations linked, so that a failure will show up at another station. Florida used to have that.

The inspections are just lip service to the EPA & Feds. The fee is just an easy tax for the state. The DPS guys could probably care less about your car passing inspection properly or not. Their main task is to enforce the payment of the inspection tax.
