Right now I have the stock style L48 radiator and a flex fan running. She stays cool cruising between 38-72 but outside that range tends to heat up and at idle temps simply skyrocket. Now to fix this, I was going to go with a DeWitts L82 style radiator and a 16" 2900cfm Be Cool electric fan. Now, uncle sam hit me a little harder than I was expecting this year so the DeWitts radiator is a bit out of my price range. Are there any other good AL radiators out there that will perform comparably for the time being? Also, is running the 16" e-fan without a shroud ok?

You have some good options. Obviously if you can afford it go with a Dewitt's. Top notch. But as you said budget constraints may limit you. Luckily there is a Northern radiator, through Summit, that is a fairly cheap aluminum radiator, built here in the USA, that'll work wonders for you.

I am looking for the part number now.

As for the fan, staying on the budget mind set, I would suggest a Lincoln MarkVIII fan, either from Ebay or a salvage yard and a variable speed controller from Delta.

The rad shipped will be just over $300 and the fan and controller would be another $200 or less.

Not bad.

Also make sure you seal all the way around the radiator so the only air goes through it.

On that site, Cool-USA has one for $300 for a '79 with an auto tranny (2.25" thick AL)...I've never heard of them before though. What are they like?

Summit has a radiator for $180 that fits with a few modifications

I think it's this one: SUM-380331

I don't remember who posted it but there was a long thread about this Summit radiator not too long ago.....
