Default steering/horn problems

Group,

I recently replaced the turn signal switch on my 77. Well, after the disassembly/reassembly, the steering wheel telescopes in and out by itself freely. Am i missing a step in the re-assembly? I also have tilt wheel. Is there a locking mechanism/lever that locks the wheel in the desired telescoped position? Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will totally dissassemble if necessary to explore if someone can lead me in a direction.

Thanks, Chris

yes you have missed a step.....inside the wheel is a funny looking washer with radius'es cut out of it....this needs to be placed so that when the telescoping lever turns it moves it properly to tighten the wheel... i realize this is a poor explanation but go back and reorient that funny looking washer a couple of turns CCW and it should work out ok

the locking lever is on top of the horn hub and it moves form side to side....to the right is what locks it

Here is a picture of a 1977 T&T steering wheel and attaching parts.

There is a "star" screw that threads into the end of the telescoping steering shaft. The lever attaches to it with two small screws. Rotating the lever turns the star screw in or out (locking or unlocking the telescoping feature.)

Here is what might have happened. Inside the steering shaft, right behind the "star" screw is a metal dowel. A little less than 1/4 inch diameter and 3.4 inches long. If you had the steering column tipped down and the steering wheel parts removed, that rod sometimes falls out and goes unnoticed.

you also may not have the orientation of the star screw correct so that when you turn it.....it does not turn all the way.
