need some help. i want to replace the original factory quad-jet, and upgrade to an aftermarket carb that will bolt on to the factory alumminum intake. anybody have any suggestions?
oh yeah, removed all the emmision garbage but have not removed the EGR valve yet, cant find a plate to bolt in place to cover hole. any thoughts on this?
Since you pitched all the emission garbage, first off, DON'T THROW ANY OF IT AWAY!. Take off the original EGR manifold and go with a Edelbrock 2101 or 2701 manifold ( $120. ) and a 1406 carb. ($230) Use the Edelbrock drop base air cleaner ($30.) and you will be very happy!
Just my own opinion
The Q-Jet is a 750cfm carb, the Edelbrock 1406 is a 600cfm carb. Your car may feel more responsive but you will be down on HP. A well tuned Q-Jet can support over 400HP.
The only performance increase you will see with an aftermarket carb on a stock engine is a lighter wallet.

If the carb number is 17058211 (78 L82 4 speed) and you replace it, I will buy it.
Do yourself a favor and get in touch with Lars on teh board here and let him work his magic on that Q-jet. There are many satisfied people here that he has redone the q-jet for.

...think Lars is on a 6 month break from tune/carb rebuids...??? x 2...

Yes rexx, the numbers are 17058211, had some trouble reading them, they were in a little circle on back of the carb, had to put my glasses o n to read them. and the car is a 78 L82 4 speed.
all of the emmision garb has been taken off and stored away in tubs with the rest of parts i have collected over the years, even manage to get air tubes off in one peice. was doing a lot of internet search on the Q/J and yes it is a 750 cfm, but the engine is not using all of it, found out from lars that the secondarys are only 3/4 open at around 5500 rpm, and yes the carb can be tuned, but takes a lot of work and patience to get right.Edelbrock performer EPS #2701 works great on the 350, and adding the performer 600cfm #1406 increases torque and HP considerably plus it will fit under stock hood, so i ordered it today. i do appreciate all of the feed back though, as for selling the Q/J im not sure can always use again if unhappy with edelbrock carb, but everything is alaways for sell, make me an offer i cant refuse and i will think on it. I will keep everyone posted on how the new combo works.
No matter what anyone tells you, I like my 2701 and 1406 Edelbrock setup. As for the lost HP, I can smoke my tires without trying! No lost HP here! Good luck! As you can see, it all fits under the stock hood. Picture below is with HOOD SHUT.
As for my stock Q-Jet, big $$$ getting it rebuilt. Ive had it done twice in 70k miles. The new Edelbrock was much less than the rebuild.... I did the 260hp crate 3 year 100k mile warranty.. Very happy and I can drive it ANYWHERE on Unleaded 87 without any "ping".

Q-Js are not difficult to tune/setup.
Yes, the 750 rating is not relevant or used on mild 350s- Q-Js were used on up to 500 c.i. Remember a carb is a responsive device.
yes a carb is a responsive device, to the amount of air that is drawn in,but some respond better than others, the Q-J is a good carb but to get the most out of it requires a lot of time and money, plus it is not easy to set up,i think you would agree with that and performance parts are not as easily available. the Q-J has its place and serves its purpose well, but i do beleive a good performance carb will out perform, and is more consistant. performance carbs can be tempramental at times, but can be tuned much easier. Like i said earlier i ordered the performer EPS intake #2701, and performer 600 cfm carb #1406, and they should be here wednesday thursday, and will let everyone know ASAP how the performance works out.
Q-Jet rebuild kit $20
Q-Jet jets and rods $25
20 mpg and 380 hp - priceless.
The Edelbrock carb is a clone of the old Carter AFB. The AFB was the base carb used by GM before they changed over to the Q-Jet. GM changed over for a reason.
Like I said before, your car may be more responsive but don't expect to be any faster. And, you will be using more gas for the same or less performance.

I have the Edelbrock Performer intake with the 1406 carb right now on my '80 4-speed car. I'm currently trying to get a Qjet on the car so I can run the stock dual snorkel air intake. I have the open element drop base Edelbrock, but I want to pull fresh air from in front of the radiator.
As mentioned earlier, with this setup I have no trouble with power. It's just not the setup I want currently.

They also stopped making convertibles, the big block engine, chrome bumpers, and a lot of things we like about the Corvette in the mid 70's.
Just because GM changed their supplier, doesn't mean they made the right decision. Just look at the C4 . (Just kidding).
I ran a Q-jet for years on my race car, and spent thousands keeping it tuned and working. Because GM used the Q-jet for production cars, I couldn't use a Carter. I wish I had all that money back now...
Torque wins stoplight races. I'll take the extra 4%.
TQ does win stop light races, but he who gets to their optimum TQ first is in an advantage, if the QJ was superior to all other carbs, then nobody would be using other carbs to replace them, also the QJ does not flow as well nor is it consistent, and is a bear to set up and adjust, a person could chase a QJ all day trying to keep it tuned.
