started the car to warm up. hasn't been started in about 3 days. went back out to leave and theres smoke comming from under the dash. that o so familiar aroma of burning plastic wiring sheath in the air.
it only does it when the engine is running. with the key, fan motor, radio and lights, nothing. couldn't pin point a location. is there something to look for first? something common? or do i just start sorting through wires?
Man. As a sparky. I am compelled to say you have to find that source/cause. It could be anything. I had a friend's Porche burn up the whole inside like that. Pull the battery cable NOW!
Bite the bullet and pull the center console apart and see where it is. You can't let out much of the magic smoke without leaving marks somewhere. Better to do it now instead of fartin around and your next post shows a burned out husk

agreed, it won't be driven again until i find something. why the center console? the smoke is under the dash. is there something under the console i should look for?

I would start with anything modded,
I.E. Aftermarket stereo, splices that are not factory, TAPED spots, anything Bubba.

I had this happen. Smoke from the center console. From a rear speaker wire, modded, from a taped spice done by Bubba. And for this kind of workmenship I paid almost $400 for the first Alpine cassette player back around '78-'79. Still have it in the car. I think it puts out 8 watts. Amazing what you can get now for the money ain't it?
