Default Hooker/side pipes test run

This afternoon I tried out my Hooker pipes that were ceramic coated by JEt-HOt.

Kinda of a process to get them all hooked up thank goodness it is done,,, so today I fired her up and took off down the road. I have the Max flo inserts and the first thing I noticed was that my under hood heat was really reduced, I was amazed and I think the cabin heat will be reduced as well, hopefully.

I dont know if I will like the loudness of the pipes, in fact they seemed louder in the car than out of the car. Iam going to give it some time for me to get accustomed to the sound, the diference is quite dramatic compared to the stock set up. I turned on the radio and I could not hear it very well,,,I may need to go to the glaspacks.

Are the glaspacks more quiet ????

I did not notice any performance gain at all, I could not feel any extra HP in the seat of my pants. That was something I expected and did not get. But after thinking about it,,the heads are just stock heads so I could not really expect much realistically.

My question on here is if I wanted to go quiter with the pipes what would I use to tone down the noise ????

Thanks.

The primaries are a little too big for a 350ci SB, you may have lost a few HP .... they look and sound awesome so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You think the pipes are loud because they dump too close to your ear. There are quieter mufflers but those will cost you HP...

I think there was a forum member who tried these conical inserts between the collector and the muffler insert. I've seen these cones in Summit or Jegs catalog, a little expensive but if it makes it quieter without restricting the exhaust too much it may be worth the money...

Reverse flow will be quietest but will rob Horsepower. I tried spirals and max flows and still to loud. Took off the Hooker/side pipes-will save them for weekend driver I will build one of these days but they were to loud for daily driver for me.

I did it with the cones, it actually made me loose HP from the glass packs and was not any quieter. Ran awesome at highway flow speeds but from stop light to stop light on the old 350 was not enough back pressure to keep it idling right and consistent!

Something else was wrong. An engine doesn't need back pressure to idle correctly. A simple carb adjustment probably would have taken care of the problem.

If you want hp, buy the spiral turbo baffles. They are not quiet but those sidepipes lose hp with any other mufflers. With the st baffles, they gain lots of the hp.

as well as "sweet thunder" baffel inserts, they r amazing, a bit heavier than the st baffels, but weigh bout the same as a normal side pipe muffler

Hi

If the pipes are too löoud, just try the reverse flow mufflers.
They robb power, but that is only at high RPM. Who's cruising at high RPM with a 350 or BB engine ?
The reverse flows will make you think driving a Caddy, you just can't hear the exhaust anymore.
I use them as well, but only for the governmental bi-yearly checkup.

The 427 BB had measured 78 DB A at 4000 RPM measured 10 meters ( 30 Foot ) behind the car . That's like nothing.

Worse a try.

Dang nice car and burnout Daytona69. That burnout must have taken a third of your tires off...cool, but eventually expensive.

When I did my turbo install I built sidepipes because I wanted to see how much cooler the cabin would be without the under car exhaust. It made a huge difference over the heddman headers that ran under the car. I actually have a hole burned through the floor in one spot from the headers being so close to it. Now the footwells are nice and cool and you cant feel any heat around the shifter handle like before. Ok now after being off topic a bit, back to sidepipe noise. They say, (whoever they are?) that turbos actually quiet your exhaust down and when I first got the car on the road I had straight pipes and they were too loud to drive on the street so I added some 24 inch long, perforated core glasspacks and they helped alot. With the windows up and the t tops in, the car is too loud inside for my taste but if the windows are down and the tops off its not bad at all. With the cabin closed up I get this resonance inside at freeway speeds and it gets real annoying after an hour or two. I might try some louvered core mufflers to see if it quiets things down a little more, the down side being more backpressure which is not good with turbos. I talked to several companys that make inserts/cones and they all said I wouldnt be happy with the minimal noise reduction so I never bought any to try. So for around town go with the noisy mufflers and if you plan a longer trip, swap in the quieter ones so you can stand to drive it all day long.

Thanks for all the good input guys,,,,,this is helping me to decide on things, I do drive the car on the highway a lot since I dont live in the city. To the lake stuff and out on the open road for a couple of hours kind of a thing.

In fact my GF is to be here in about a hour and we will take a little ride for about 30 minutes or so to see how things go as far as loud pipes are concerned.

Iam pretty sure the GF will be bitchin about the noise,,,,, so we shall see LOL LOL

My son and I went to San Diego and back last year (4,000 miles round trip from Nebraska) with hooker four inch pipes and max-flow mufflers. Ear plugs worked great and it was fun watching cars we passed rolling up their windows...

You need to just get rid of the sidepipes. I will be happy to take them off of your hands for a nominal fee.
