Default The Corvette wave...

Well, I've only had my 69 since late December, so I haven't been able to drive it very much. Not to mention the fact, I've been doing some extensive work to have it roadworthy by springtime for crusin. So yesterday was in the 60's and the car show in Ocean City, MD.(about 30 miles from here) was on my mind. Decided to give the Vette a drive. It was the most I'd driven it yet, in one cruise. 100 miles there and back!
Anyway, I started to notice something... Every C4-5 or 6 I saw waved at me(didn't see any C3's, except for 1 at the show itself. A 69 BB, which I voted for)! Like I'm in some sort of private club or something with a secret passcode. I didn't know what to say to my wife, who was with me(suprisingly, since I've spent half of the winter in the garage). What do I do? Across from me at the next light was another C5, he's waving too! I guess I'll do the only thing that comes naturally...wave back.
I must say, this is my first Vette so I'm sure I sound like a noob. What a feeling of acceptance! What a brotherhood! I look forward to being part of this elite group of wavers and hope to wave at all of you out there on the road someday soon!

Ya, the wave is a little inside thing. It's getting more and more rare though as people who aren't real enthusiasts puchase C5's and 6's. Here in S. Flroida where every other car is a Vette it's VERY rare.

Just wave whether they do or not. It's what we do.

Default It's a Corvette RULE

C4,5,6 drivers didn't wave because you were driving a C3. They waved because they were driving Corvettes and so were you.

It's a rule, not just something some Corvette owners do once in a while:

The " mystic and culture" goes beyond the wave....the other day,I had my vette parked near a busy street at a restaurant....a guy came by in his truck, staring at my vette, and almost crashed into a parked car....

When my Vette was new EVERY Corvette on the road would wave. But when the '84 came out I almost never got a wave back from them. This seemed to go on for years. And it didn't change much with the C5. Now though most C4s wave and some 5s & 6s.

Maybe they see C3s in a little different light now.................

Especially the C4 guys........

Don't listen to "the rules" regarding the accusation that late-model owners aren't "real enthusiasts." That's BS. The majority of the C5/6 owners I know have had early models in their lifetime.

As a newbie, don't buy into that crap.

I've waved my fool hand off and I'd say the reply rate is 25%. I was even on base today painting my engine bay. I'm right across the road from the gas station where I saw three vettes. A C4 and two C5's. They're looking right at me as I stand in the engine bay and mask off parts. So I wave and they stare at me like I'm some sort of idiot. I give up. At least until she's on the road again at which point I'm sure I'll be the idiot waving out the T-tops like a madman.

I am not sure it is REALLY an inside thing, or perhaps wasn't always an inside thing.

In the '73 brochure, the wave was detailed by Chevy!!

Approximate Quote: 'Of all the sportscars made anywhere in the world only Corvette owners wave to each other'

Default Wave rate >80% here

Here in Minnesota, the wave rate is at least 80%, probably because the Minnesota Corvette season is so short and we are more aware of them during the driving season.

I live on the other coast of Florida and have noticed that same phenomenon too. Another C-3 will always wave, and the rare C-2 you encounter on the road always does too.

Maybe the guys driving C5's and 6's are too preoccupied talking to thier brokers on their cell phones to notice.

Its encouraging that you got so many from C5 and C6 owners. They often don't know about the wave. I usually get blank stares from many of them.

Here's one from me.

I wait for them to wave. They wave, I wave back. They don't wave, I stick them in the rear view mirror.

I wave no matter if they wave or not. It is proper etiquette. I some times even wave at other Corvettes if I'm not driving my Corvette, and feel like a total fool.
I have even noticed that Corvette owners will park there Corvettes near other Corvettes at stores, and restaurants.

I wave whenever I see another Corvette in time. Sometimes I may not see it till its gone by. I do get waves from C-4 and C5 owners but there is another point too. A lot of the newer cars have the windows tinted here in Fl. and I can't tell if the driver is waving or not

waving is very important. There is nothing better than giving a hearty wave and getting one in return.

Or in the case of C5 owners, getting at least 3 fingers coming up off the steering wheel for 1/2 second...
