How to remove Vent *****?

I know this is really a dumb question, but does anybody know a way to get the ***** off of the vent controls on the console? I have never had the shifter plate off before but need to get in there and I can't get those freakin ***** to come loose.
Any tricks out there? before I

I found the set screws under the front lip of the ****. I had searched around the outside but when I saw your reply I looked again and found them...
