Default gas tank

Pulled out gas tank today to retrieve what was left of my tank sticker. only a small strip was left, but it was the section with all rpo numbers! I want to clean up the tank and rear area of car and was wondering if gas tanks were painted or coated with anything originally. I have several books and nothing is mentioned. searched forum and couldnt find it either. thanks for your help.

Hey vet Fan, I also have a 69 conv. What do you have to do and how hard is it to take out the gas tank. The guy I bought it from says that the built sheet should still be there. How long would the R & R be? Thanks

I installed a new tank in my 72 last fall. I believe they came from the factory unpainted. I did paint mine because that's just me.

They are not hard to change. While I was at it I replaced everything but the sending device at the bottom. I spent a couple of days cleaning the tank space. I did drop one exhaust pipe to make it easier to get things up there. I would rate ths a 2-3 on the 1-5 scale and I am no mechanic. But I do have a lift which made the job easier. I think I spent about $225 for the whole project.

I was thinking about spraying the outside of my tank with tank-tone....with zinc in it to stop it from rusting... but Im not sure im going to do it...I have my sticker off mine right now..whats left of it.....I cleaned out my tank by pouring gas in and out into a bucket and getting all the stuff that was in there Out.........theres a tiny bit of rust in the bottom...very very little......Have any of you tried that tank repair kit that the corvette stores on-line sale.....or should I have it boiled out......I dont think with gas in the tank it will rust any more....its really pretty clean......anyway.......thanks

Just keep the water out of the tank that comes from condensation.Everytime I tune one up I vacuum the bottom of the tank by using a siphon hose.

The tanks came from the factory with a lead compound coating, this wears off over time, thus the rusting. If you have had a large amount of water in your tank and it is not from condensation then you might check the cork gasket under the filler neck.
