Default Electric Fuel Pump

I am thinking of installing an electric fuel pump on one of my other carbed vehicles. Is there any problems with installing the electric pump inline with the mechanical? I am thinking of using the electrical just for when the car has been sitting and to restart it when its hot, to prevent vapor lock. Can the electric push through the mechanical without any problems? Can the mechanical pull through the electrical without any problems?

This may be a dumb question, but why not just have the electric one? And put a block plate where the mechanical one goes? All you would need would be a pressure regulator, right? Or am I way off base here?

I would like to add some redundancy into the system. I dont want to have depend on the electric pump 100% of the time. I want to keep the mechanical there to do the pumping the majority of the time, to help extend the life of the electric pump.

had a 67 427 with a carter 80gph electric pump installed back by tank and used stock mechanical pump with no problems, car pulled to 7000 rpms, no miss, hesitation etc.
