Default 4 or 5 quarts

I changed my oil in the vette yesterday for the first time (Just got it late last fall) The book says it takes 5 quarts with a filter change. When I drained the oil from the pan and the filter, it seemed like there was only 4 quarts - I didn't measure it but that is what it felt like. So I only put in 4 quarts and then I checked the dipstick. It was about 5/8 (more than half) between add a quart and full. I took it out and drove it and checked it again and it was the same, the pressure read about 38.

It is a 77 L-82, so what is the deal? When I checked the dipstick I took it out, wiped it clean and pushed it all the way back in and checked it. I put in another half quart today cause I was worried that it might be low, but now the dipstick shows almost at the top of the full mark.

Should I put in the other half quart or just leave it????

TIA

The dipstick and tube may be suspect.
Especially if you did it when hot and didn't rush.

Is bottom of the oil pan crushed?

My Vette, from the factory has always used 4 1/2 quarts with a "short" oil filter and 5 with the long truck filter. It came with the short filter new & says to use 5 quarts in the manual.

Go figure.....
