One of my best friends is about to ship out to a 3rd World Country...
He is going into a bad area...has been told that the guns will be in the back of the vehicle in some places.(Dam UN ties are troops hands and puts their lifes at risk)
I want to buy him a combat knife but his life may depend on it...I need to get the right knife.
He is a Marine...and a skilled fighter...very strong and fast.
I need some help...what should I buy?
Not long after he gets back from this armpit, he goes to Iraq...
Mods...please dont move this ...I know it should be in OT but those Guys can be less than cool...and my friends life may depend on what I pick
I have never liked the Rambo style knives and I hate messing with folding knives when you're in the thick of things. I prefer a good Tanto, and here's the quickest I could find that any guy would like. Combines the hand to hand tactics of a knife and brass knuckles.
I asked if he could have a trench knife, with brass knuckles...
He thought they are not allowed.
Do you know?
I was thinking about one of the dark ops knifes.

He needs to be more clear about what he can have and what he can't. If he has to speak with his SO to figure it out then I would suggest that.
i think it's bull**** that the government wont allow him to take a weapon to protect him..... shyt...nunchucks. blowgun....knife......etc....... tell the effin g-ment to take care of the damn troops then...... i have friends and family over there now and they were injured/shot at/etc..... you think the government is gonna take care of them when they get back....
What bugs me is being told that the stuff that he has to do before Iraq ...will be done with guns packed away...
Why put troops in the Sh** like that?
Some half a** country wants us to help them with their trash, but they cant cary their firearms in "this area" it might cause a problem.
UN
let him pick it.....give him a gift certificate and tell him what its for.....
That would work if he had more time.
New wife and baby and is out of here in about 10 days.
If I had thought of it sooner .....
Just made the offer today to get him one after we talked...I cant send him without one.
Don't get me wrong, I think your heart is in the right place and you are doing the right thing but he will be limited in what he is able to take with him because of the Geneva Convention and something called the Law of War and Rules of Engagement. Standing on the outside it makes no sense but the rules serve a purpose. We are suppose to kill each other in civil ways, not with 18 inch knives that Rambo made popular ~ of course a terrorist shouldn’t use a car bomb either but the difference is the terrorist is not fighting for or representing a country…I could go on and on…
My recommendation is to get your friend a nice Gerber (or other brand) multi-tool/knife. He should be able to take this with him and will think of your friendship every time he pulls it out. I carried one throughout my career and it now rests in my toolbox. Came in handy while opening ammo boxes or MREs (chow)...never had to use it in a knife fight but then I always had a 45 or a 9 on me. Your friend will be OK, the Marines know how to do things right. We took a few lumps in the early '80s over the way we let the UN run things in Beirut but that is not the way anymore...take a knife to a fist fight, take a gun to a knife fight and take many, many guns to a gun fight. From what your friend has shared with you about the upcoming mission it seems that your friend is not even going to a fistfight but he will have his weapon nearby should he need it.
Tell him I said Semper Fi, keep your head down and try not to look important - that draws sniper fire!
I think it's BS that he can't take what he wants, but I know that there are reasons for it. They may want him to have one with a certain anti spark coating due to high volatility in some areas he may be. They may also specify a certain color due to the need for camaflauging. The military can be a PITA sometimes, but a lot of the rules were written with blood!
Tell him to be sure and give it a good "twist" after penetration...

I think that a Kabar is a great knife...but newer knifes are lighter...and maybe stronger.
There is just so much crap out there I hate to give him something that would let him down.
I would call some S.F guys I know and ask them but they are not around much lately.

Is one hell of a blade and has a great feel to it, had one when I was in too. Not to mention the history behind them, they've been carried by Marines for a long long time (fuzzy on when they were introduced atm), and still used today.
Or the NCO sword , (if E4+) that would be a site to see, but those haven't been used in combat for a long time.
