Default Help! Another newbie has another question!

I'll try and be brief....

Mahogany w/ blk. leather int., '78 L-82, 4-spd bone stock, Q-jet

Want to add more hp slowly (I have a limited budget)

What headers could I use with my stock set up until I get more $$?

Same for intake manifold and mufflers. Live in Illinois so must go through EPA testing yearly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Concidering you have to do smog testing, I would go with a full length jet coated headers, Hookers or the like. Dual cats and good mufflers, Borla maybe.
Then, what intake do you have? The aluminum Edlebrock Performer that came on some yrs is a good one, acceptd EGR and can be cleaned up nice or ordered with Endurashine to make it pretty too.
Cam. LOTS of options, to many to list. Smarter guys than me will pipe in on this part.
Carb, hang with the Q-Jet, its good stuff and there are good carb guys in here. Maybe Lars will chime in.

Have Al intake manifold. What cats do you recommend? Are block hugger headers recommended?

I got block huggers for mine, will see how it works out. Some guys have had problems with them burning motor mounts, I haven't looked that close yet to see why. Ecklers, Mid america, corvette america, Jegs, Summit, all them guys have hi flow cats. Go with the 2 1/2" if you can get them. No need for 3" on a street motor unless it is really built and run at high RPM.

Hedman has headers for the air tubes, which is why many of the Calif. guys use them.

Illinois has EPA testing??? I've been an Illinois car owner for...well lets just say I'm older than my C3, and I've never had to get inspected. Yikes. As rich as my 78 runs, and it's stock, I'd never pass.

Just Chicago and surrounding areas and St. Louis area. I'm far enough south out of the city that I never needed to bother with the testing. Got antique vehicle plates anyway.

Be careful with dual cats too. Here in VA, if your car came with only one, you can't add another.

I'm one of the lucky ones in St Clair county that get to go through the drill. Hey, if your poor and can't fix your car you can get waiver ( a gift from the great state of IL, like food stamps or assisted housing........the rest of us have to pony up the $$$ to fix em.

Since you have the L-82 and you want to watch what you spend...
  • Stick with the L-82 intake.. ita already aluminum, supports EGR, and doesnt lose anything to a Performer manifold with EGR... Feel free to take it off and clean it up though.
  • Headers.. well Hedman make the only full length headers that come with air tubes from the mfr.. that I've seen. painted (p/n 68301) or coated (p/n 66301) they are expensive.
  • Cam - flat tappet for your price range...Comp cams High energy 268H (p/n 12-210-2) is a smog legal cam thats a decent step up from the L-82 cam
  • Heads - iron for price... you need heat crossover.. World products SR torquers are a direct bolt on and are quite affordable.
  • exhaust..if you have to stick with the 2-1-2 setup like I do in california then your options are limited...basicly - factory or custom - my exhaust is a custom 2 1/2" fromt y-pipe that merges to a 3" high flow carsound catalytic converter, then y's back down to dual 2 1/2" and out through super turbo mufflers

Those changes will probably add as much as 100 hp to a factory 220hp L-82 assuming its in decent shape and tuned well
