Has anyone here ever sold a car to Australia or any Aussie bought a car from the states?
What I need to know is the best, quickest and most secure way for buyer and seller to complete the transaction. I've found the car I want,( its a beauty ), and I would like to get it paid for promptly. Cheques from overseas banks can take quite a while to clear, cheques from US banks usually take about about 4 weeks to clear over here. (AUS)
I am going to check with my bank on Monday, but if anyone has any experience with this, I would very much appreciate any options.
I bought a car from US 6 months ago. The Vette Net helped me with that and handled all technincal/finencial/shipping steps done on my behalf there.
Here is what I've done :
1- Found the car.
2- Asked Ken from The Vette Net to inspect it.
3- Got the report that the car was fine.
4- Paid down payment for the seller via western union.
5- Paid the remaining (including shipping and clearing charges) via bank wire transfer to Ken.
6- Ken got the title signed with my name as the owner and paid the seller.
7- Ken shipped the car to me.
8- I am enjoying driving it everyday ever since!
I chose The Vette Net because they are a supporting vendor here and got a good reputation.
Bank wire is the quickest way... but the quicker you pay, the more vulnerable you are to a scam. (Money sent quick can disappear quick). You are in Australia sending money to U.S. for a car in the states?

Yes I am in AUS.
The guy I'm buying the car from is a member here and he seems pretty straight up. He's been great at answering all my questions and sent lots of photos. Including anything he considered a fault. Can't ask for anything more than that. My main concern was ensuring a smooth transaction, not about being scamed.
I wired money for my car after it was inspected by a local inspection service. Not being 100% certain how the bank services works but I don't think a wire can be retracted. Once the wired money is in the target account, they stay there. Talk to your bank. I think the normal scam is made with checks and they can be refused at a later stage.
If you want insurance, there are escrow services available that holds the money for the seller until the car is delivered but as always insurance and services costs money. Peace of mind also have a value.
Bought a Corvette from the States April 2006. Took a lot of time building up a rapport with the seller (2 months) and had lots of pics of the car. The transaction was from bank account to bank account and took a lot of trust in between. I have a very trusted friend in the area where the car was purchased who is now a co-owner. The vehicle was better than the seller and pics indicated and there were few problems encountered. A majority of people are open and honest. Take your time as it is when you rush you open yourself to get taken.
I brought a vette from Maryland. My bank wired it to his bank and it took about 24hrs to clear. I had the car checked out by an independant appraisal company before buying it. A MUST.
