Default Interlock cable at bottom of steering column , whats it's purpose ?

I am missing the cable that runs from the arm at the bottom of the steering column that attaches to the trans linkage. I move it manually but dont see any changes. Not sure what it supposed to do? Some kind of column lock? Thanks

It locks the gear shift lever (in reverse). You need to put it in reverse to remove the key.
