Default Help fan belt squeak

I have a problem and hoping someone will share some of their wisdom on this simple problem I can't solve. My water pump, alt. fan belt squeaks and I have tried everything to stop it with no solution. Squeaks whenever you rev the engine. Tried tightening, different widths.

Any suggestions would be very helpful. I know it's probably something stupid, but it's driving me nuts.

Thanks in adavance

probably not the same problem but the previous owner of my 79 used the other flat style of alt mount and it wasnt lining up just quite right. it was really close but not quite right. i spaced it with a couple of washers and all was better. but you may want to make sure its lining up just right. just a suggestion.

You might want to check to see if a "glaze" has built up in the groove of your water pump pulley. If you see or feel anything clean it out with paint thinner or strip & repaint it........

Ck the crank pulley too.....

Squirt some Liquid Wrench or CRC on the belt. If non available drop auto trans fluid on the belts.

Could well be a worn out front bearing in the alternator.

Default Try a high quality belt....

I didn't believe it either...especially when the guy at NAPA suggested it.....but, I bought a high quality belt at NAPA and that was that. Same size and everything as my generic cheapy belt that I'd had.

Hold a bar of Ivory soap on the belt as it turns.

Make sure the pulleys are all aligned. Make sure they're clean. And replace belts w/ DAYCO Top Cog

Check for alignment
Check for worn bearings/difficult to turn.
Use a good Dayco/GM belt
Autozone belts are CRAP

Just in case...

Belt Adjustment: (pulley center to center)
7" to 10" belt deflection = 1/4"

13" to 16" belt deflection = 1/2"

..just push on belt with thumb/measure deflection at mid-point of belt....

Important pulleys line up...if one off even 3/16" overbelt length they will squeal...

I use Gates belts..never had a squeal or have used belt dressings of any kind....

Not sure how many options you have on your car, but make sure you have more than one belt around the water pump pulley. On some cars there was a belt fronm the water pump pulley to the crank pulley. No PS and no AC had them. Belt is a 36 incher I think and you need to loosen the water pump pulley/fan to get it on. Without it you can't stop the squealing. Ask me how I know.
