I tried to tip the driver and he wouldn't take it. Said the previous owner had taken care of it and mine was transported from southern New Hampshire to southern New York.
It's up to you.
Glenn
You mentioned FedEx and I believe in that division the drivers/trucks are owner/operators. Since they are in business for themselves and leased on with FedEx, I would say no tip if an actual truck owner is delivering your car. If it is a driver for an owner operator that has several trucks, I would say yes, tip him because the owner gets a share of the load. The amount would be up to you.
The amount you pay to have it transported, I wouldn't. They gave me a tip though, never leave anything in the trunk and check car over thouroughly before you sign anything!
I left toolbox, jumper cables, and few other misc items in trunk before I shipped my 69' Camaro, wouldn't you know I popped trunk the next day and it was all gone. Not to mention it was covered in road filth and did not see a big fat scratch going up the passenger quarter panel, over a foot long.
Not to mention fuel guage was 1/4 way down.
It was my fault for not checking it over better, but in all fairness I waited over 6 hours past scheduled delivery time and it came in about 10:30pm at night.
Of course I called and called the shipping company for about 3 months, got the greatest run around ever and nothing resolved.
OK, not that I'm an expert or anything, but, I am in the truckingindustry, I have hauled cars and have a friend who ones a auto transport business.I personally decided to stick to dry freight. But I digress. You Know what..I am going to put this information into a seperate thead so others can see it.. I'kk title it how to pick your car carrier
Cross country is at least $1,000 but that doesn't all go to the driver. They're usually pretty nice guys so I always give the driver a $20 if the car is a driver. If the car doesn't run and we have to manhandle it, I'll give more, up to $50.
Best,
Greg
I had this same delemma last weekend when we went to sonic during happy hour........ordered two peach sweet teas.
Now do we tip the car hop or not? The total was only $1.79 and all she did was bring it to us......that was her job and she gets a hourly paycheck.
Just do what your gut tells you, if you were to do it then figure 10% of the total, thats a good start...
I tip the car hop at Sonic..
When my car was delivered, 1250 miles by FedEx, I tipped the guy. He did a good job and my car was tempermental at the the time. He did more than deliver it, he had to figure out how to start it!!!
