You HAVE to use the safety pin in this application ... not enough clearance for vise grips. 
Back in the 70s I had the shift linkage come loose on my car .... couldn't find a cotter pin along the roadside but did find a 4 penny finishing nail ... bent it into shape and drove home. Still on the car when I sold it ... maybe someday it will be the subject of a similar post
