THATS DIRT CHEAP! For numbers look at the pad on front pass side of block just below valve cover and compare to VIN on windshield pillar. Heads pull the valve covers and look for casting numbers between rocker studs. Intake cast #'s behind carb. Carb, on drivers side running vertically by secondary lever.
You should get all the number info from various sites, books etc... and have with you when you see the car.
Good Luck!

Imo, don't insult him by nit picking numbers. If the car is solid and runs pay him the 5-6 then and there, get the title and leave promptly with the car. If the numbers match thats even better but don't **** him off because he may know what the car is really worth.

Get the 5-6K in hand, calmly place it in his, get the signed title and keys, then leave as quickly as possible and don't look back.
At that price, I wouldn't care about numbers. Heck, I wouldn't care if it had a slant 6 in it. I would take a quick look at the frame to be sure it is safe to drive home. Maybe you should pretend to look it over good so he doesn't realize that he is selling it under value. You don't want him to change his mind at the last minute.

A running driving BB bumper car (with title) for $6k, you can't go wrong.
